Margaret Catchpole (1762 - 1819) was a notorious Suffolk woman.

She was sentenced to death for stealing a horse. (It was the usual punishment for this crime then). However the Cobbold family, from whom she stole the horse, interceded on her behalf and she was spared.

She later escaped from prison, was recaptured & transported to Australia in 1801.

There Margaret had a better life -she worked hard, received a pardon and became a mid-wife, before her death in 1819.
